Educational Progression and Steel Pan Grades in UK.
Traditionally Steel Pan is 'learnt by rote' and skills passed on within steel bands as players stand shoulder to shoulder, watching, copying, "each one, teach one". This accessible technique makes steel pan very appealing to start playing pan. As players 'panists' progress, many are curious to develop skills to arrange and compose, and seek out music theory education. Since the 1970s many UK schools have steel bands, with teachers from Trinidad & others who understood the pedagogy and the cultural heritage. And true capacity of authentic steel pans. Now PRSSV Institute of Performing Arts & Heritage has developed OCN credit4leaning accredited grades for Steel Pan from entry level 3 to diploma in teaching and performance level 5. PRSSV are expert in non-western traditional music and oral traditions, and consulted with authorities in Trinidad to ensure the syllabus was appropriate and respected the heritage of Pan. Accreditation means that students can consolidate their enjoyment and skill in playing Steel Pan with recognised music qualifications. Educators can develop new skills as CPD to learn & then lead Whole Class Instrumental Ensembles in schools or for community groups with ever-popular Steel Band.
