Steel Pan is the National instrument of Trinidad & Tobago. With its very diverse population; African, Indian, Chinese and European musical heritages merged and generated exciting new music - and the steel pan instrument. Developed in communities by local bands during the 1930s & 40s, the range of instruments has grown and today The National Steel Symphony Orchestra performs a broad repertoire.(NSSOTT) The 'new' instrument can still be misunderstood and the name 'steel pan' used to describe other types of idiophone instruments. And anyone wishing to play steel pan well benefits by learning the cultural context and links to Calypso and Carnival and the distinct pedagogy. Happily, authentic steel pan is played and enjoyed around the world and in 2023 The United Nations recognised the historic & cultural significance, designating 11 August as 'World Steel Pan Day'. The UN General Assembly acknowledge that steel pan holds more opportunities to support many Sustainable Development Goals.
